WILDLIFE GARDENING

If you live in town one of the best ways to help wildlife is to garden for wildlife. This does not mean giving up on your herbaceous borders and letting the nettles grow, but just adapting what you may already be doing.

There are 15 million gardens in the UK and they are estimated to cover about 270,000 hectares, more than the area of all the National Nature Reserves in the UK. Each garden on its own may be small, but together they form a patchwork of habitats for wildlife.

In front of our Gatwick Greenspace Partnership office in Crawley, we created a wildlife garden in an area 8m by 1.5 m. This is planted up with a range of native and ornamental plants and has been alive with insects all summer long. Bluetits successfully fledged 3 young from a nest box, and finches, tits and sparrows visit our birdfeeders during the winter.

We are also able to provide advice to schools who wish to create wildlife friendly gardens which can be used for outdoor learning.

As well as nestboxes,a wildlife garden can provide an insect hotel!
