    Ash Gate Hurdle Making

    Venue: Woods Mill, Henfield

    Participants will use traditional tools and techniques to build their own gate hurdles from green ash poles. This is moderately physical work – your muscles will probably let you know you’ve been working by the end of the day! It is strongly recommended that participants have some previous experience of carpentry/woodwork.

    • How wood splits and how to control that process
    • Using traditional tools and devices
    • Making simple mortice and tenon joints

    Farming and Wildlife

    The course will look at how modern farming and farmland wildlife can co-exist, and how both cannot survive without each other.

    • Why many species associated with farmland have declined and how we can reverse those declines
    • What species to see and what they require to flourish once again
    • How a farmer can best use the Government Stewardship scheme to help farmland
