    The Trust is running six one-day bird safaris throughout the year covering different habitats and seasons. There will be opportunities to look for residents, summer and winter migrants and how birds adapt to a changing landscape.

    Carving from Nature

    Venue: Woods Mill, Henfield

    Carve your own design in wood relief using natural objects found at the site and examples of wood carving from the past as inspiration.

    Learn about
    • Ways of converting reality to stylish designs
    • Basic carving skills
    • How to use tool marks as pattern and texture
    • What tools are needed, how to sharpen them, and the stains and finishes needed to complete the work

    Course highlights
    • Create your own design from the most pleasing forms you find at the site

    Farmland Birds

    Farmland birds have been declining over the last 40 years but there are some farms that offer a considerable contribution to help in the recovery of some of their numbers. This course is based on one such farm. It involves an indoor session at Southbourne Village Hall and then will move to Lordington Farm a distance of just over two miles.

    Ash Gate Hurdle Making

    Venue: Seven Sisters Country Park, nr Seaford
    Date: Saturday 13
    Time: 10:00 - 17:00

    Content:
    Participants will use traditional tools and techniques to build their own gate hurdles from green ash poles. This is moderately physical work – your muscles will probably let you know you’ve been working by the end of the day! It is strongly recommended that participants have some previous experience of carpentry/woodwork.

    • The growth of trees and the properties of green wood
    • How wood splits and how to control that process
    • Using traditional tools and devices
    • Making simple mortice and tenon joints

    The How, When and Why of Gardening with Birds in Mind

    Gardens are becoming increasingly important for the survival of many of our wild birds and a thriving industry has developed around helping you look after the birds. This course will look at how you can attract birds to your garden and
    will also cover some of the problems you need to look out for. It will involve an indoor session and a walk around Woods Mill nature reserve.

    Beginning Nature Photography

    Two-day course for beginners with digital SLR cameras only. Not suitable for users of film, point and shoot or hybrid cameras.

    • Day One - camera basics, manual control, manual metering, aperture priority and depth of field control
    • Day Two - advanced metering and exposure compensation, composition, putting it all together, making a good shot better, fieldwork and supports
