    RX Wildlife Festival 2012

    There will be wildlife activities at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, East Guldeford Level, Camber, Dungeness RSPB and the Romney Marsh Visitor Centre. Most activities are free, but donations will be appreciated. Children are especially welcomed, but must be accompanied by an adult.

    A Guided Walk around Ancient Wildflower Meadows - Rocks Farm, Ashburnham - Eastbourne Group

    Keith Datchler will lead us on a walk through the ancient wildflower meadows of this private estate. Take the A271 towards Battle and then take the first turning on the left signed to Ponts Green and Woods Corner. Then take the second right into Lakehurst Lane and follow this to the end of the road marked “Private Beech Estate”. Continue up the drive and park on the left. Grid Ref. TQ689174.

    Bushcraft Days for Children - Leechpool & Owlbeech Woods, Horsham

    A great day out in the woods spent learning wilderness survival skills. Practise shelter building, fire lighting, tool making and identify useful plants for food and medicine.

    Suitable for 8 – 14 year olds. Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult. Please bring a packed lunch and drink and wear suitable outdoor clothing/footwear and sun protection for the weather conditions.

    Meet in Leechpool & Owlbeech Woods Car Park, off Harwood Road (B2195), Horsham. Bus stop on Harwood Road, 2mins walk from meeting place.

    High Tide at Tilgate - Marine Roadshow

    We are bringing the seashore to Tilgate Park!!! Join us at our marine roadshow and find out more about the amazing plants and animals that inhabit our shores around Sussex. Find out about some of the threats that are facing this fragile world and how you can help protect it. Join in the family activities and have fun with arts and crafts.

    The event will take place in front of the children’s play area overlooking the lake.

    Explore Your Shore - Hastings Marine Roadshow

    Want to find out more about the amazing wildlife that inhabits the seas around our coasts? Would you like to be able to identify some of the marine life that you find washed up on our beaches? Do you want to learn more about the threats that are facing our seas and what is being done about them? If so, look out for our Marine Roadshow at Pelham Place beach front on the promenade at Hastings – between Aquila House and The Stade.

    This event will be run in partnership with Hastings Borough Council Rangers, Active Hastings, Foreshore, and Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Access to Nature.

    No booking necessary.

    Walk - A Feast of Wild Orchids - Everybody Welcome

    Meet at 9.45 in the car park of the Bax Castle Inn, Three Mile Ash, Horsham (Explorer Map 134: TQ 148272) approx 2½ miles southwest of Horsham. Travelling north on the A24, turn right on the B2237 towards Horsham. After about ½ mile, turn left just before The Blue Boar Inn signed towards Christ’s Hospital. Keep to this road (don’t turn right at next sign to Christ Hospital) you will find the Bax Castle on your left after approximately 2 miles.

    The morning walk is about four miles long. Initially we will proceed south on the Downs Link passing through parts of the village of Southwater to a meadow within Southwater Country Park. This meadow is well known for the abundance of wild orchids which are best seen at this time of the year. We will return to the pub for lunch through woodland and farmland.

    The pleasant afternoon walk is shorter at about two and a half miles and takes us north on the Downs Link, returning mainly through farmland.

    This figure of eight walk allows someone to do just either the morning walk or the afternoon one.

    Take a Walk on the Wild Side in June

    Join us for a walk across the Downs overlooking the Cuckmere Valley and discover a world rich with grassland flowers. Discover bird’s foot trefoil and wild thyme hidden amongst the grass and search for early purple orchids. Whether you are an expert or just want to be able to identify some of the common plants this is an opportunity to enjoy a walk, the scenery, some good company, and of course the flowers.

    Suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and upwards.

    Meet at the Pump Barn behind the Visitor Centre at Seven Sisters Country Park, Exceat, Nr Seaford.

    Limited wheelchair access to Park. No wheelchair access to grassland. Toilet including disabled at Visitor Centre. Sorry no dogs.

    Sussex Festival of Nature 2012 - Stanmer Park, Brighton

    Enjoy a fantastic free family day out at this year’s Sussex Festival of Nature at Stanmer Park. Come and join the Sussex Wildlife Trust as we host a garden for wildlife interactive zone with bug hunting, pond dipping, quizzes, plant fun, games and lots more. Join the marine team on their ‘tour de fish’ as they complete their 26 mile cycle into Stanmer Park from Littlehampton to raise support for marine conservation. There will be plenty of marine activities too.

    The whole festival is a chance to find out about your local wildlife, enjoying hands-on activities, sample the huge variety of great tasting local produce, drink some local beer, enjoy local entertainment....and that is just the start!

    Trains to Falmer from Eastbourne and Brighton. Half a mile walk through park to Stanmer House.

    Bus 78 Brighton to Stanmer Park. There will be additional bus services available from Brighton.

    Free bike park.

    £5 parking charge for cars.

    Moth & Bat Night in Ringmer Orchard

    'Common Cause’ are running an event at the Ringmer Community Orchard, I’ll be joining them as the sun sets and lighting up the evening with some bright moth traps. Join us as the moths start flying in and learn more about these beautiful nocturnal insects. We’ll also have bat detectors so we can ‘hear’ the bats that are hunting in the orchard.

    All children must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs welcome if under close control.

    A Visit to SWT Old Lodge Reserve on Ashdown Forest - Eastbourne Group

    This SWT Reserve has much to offer in the way of breeding birds and if the day is sunny also dragonflies. Meet in the Reserve Car Park which is on the West side of the B2026 between Maresfield and Hartfield. Grid Ref. TQ469306.
